Medley Relay
It is a team race where four swimmers take turns to complete a distance. Each swimmer covers a quarter of the distance in a different style. The order of styles is different from Individual Medley because it would be difficult to start Backstroke in the middle of the race. So, the sequence is: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, and Freestyle.
Officials on deck ensure safety, organization, timekeeping, and fair competition. During the race, they observe you swimming to the best of your ability and ensure the rules of the competition. They implement the rules with a heavy heart, knowing it's a part of the swimmer's learning process. By learning the rules during practice and reviewing them here, you reduce the likelihood of disqualification.
We compiled a list of what you can do in a Medley Relay event to have a valid race. This list is not exhaustive! Keep following your coach's instructions to swim properly while being competitive.
1
The order of swimmers must be respected. Make sure to plan your team's strategy with your coach.
2
Swimmers must swim the styles in the following sequence: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle.
3
Follow the rules of each style.
4
In the transition, only leave the block when the other swimmer finishes. You can start the movement forward, but some part of your body must remain in contact with the block until the other swimmer touches the wall.
5
In the transition, when you finish your distance, leave the pool as soon as you can, getting out of the away of your teammate.
6
The last swimmer must remain in the lane until all swimmers have finished. Leave the pool when instructed to do it.
7
When celebrating, do not jump back to the pool. The only swimmer allowed in the water is the one who just finished.
